Tips for Helping Children Deal with Their Grief & Loss
Unfortunately, most of us experience a death of a loved one as children. It may be a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or another relative. Children cope with loss in different ways. It will depend on their age, how close they were, and the support they receive. Here are some tips to help children deal with the grief & loss of a loved one:
• Use Simple Words:
Be direct when telling your child someone has died but use simple words. You can say “I have some sad news. Your grandfather has died.” Give your child time to react.
• Listen To & Comfort:
Every child reacts to the news of someone dying differently. Regardless of how your child reacts, be there for them and offer support and comfort. Offer hugs, let your child cry, and have them talk about th eir feelings. Put your feelings into words and ask them how they are feeling.
• Explain What Will Happen:
Explain to your child any disruptions to their normal routines and the timeline for any funeral proceedings. This helps your child feel prepared for what comes next.
• Have Your Child Help:
Give them a small role that makes them feel like they are helping. You can have them pick a song to be played, gather pictures for a collage, or make something. Let your child pick how they will help.
