Can a Viewing or Funeral Be Held Before Cremation?
Can a Viewing or Funeral Be Held Before Cremation?
Many wonder if a viewing or funeral service can be held prior to cremation services being performed, and the simple answer is yes. The extended answer includes one stipulation, which is a viewing or funeral may not be possible if the late loved one’s wishes include a direct cremation. However, in this case, it’s best to discuss these details with the funeral home the services have been arranged through.
When speaking with the funeral directors, it’s important to understand the difference between a visitation and a viewing. A viewing is more commonly known and includes family and friends seeing the deceased one last time prior to burial or cremation. A visitation, however, may or may not include the deceased and the memorial is reserved for after burial or cremation.
There are multiple types of viewings, as well, including:
· Private Family Viewing: This is one of the most common viewings arranged, as only immediate family or selected family members are permitted to attend.
· Public Service: Public viewing often requires the embalming process to be performed, as well as a rental casket, allowing for extended family and friends to attend and overall host a larger viewing event.
· Identification-Only: This is a brief viewing that fulfills the identification process required to proceed with the cremation services, typically only entailing one or two people to confirm the identity of the deceased.
A viewing often lasts between two and three hours, and often includes sharing stories and mementos, playing music that was meaningful for the late loved one, and sharing final sentiments with the deceased.
