Tips for Talking About Final Wishes With Your Loved Ones

Discussing final wishes with a loved one is always challenging. We do not like to think about death. We all know it is bound to happen, but we try to not think about it. This may sound like a good idea, but it has many drawbacks. Loved ones may be left wondering what your final wishes were, family feuds may occur, and the uncertainty about the division of assets are common results of not discussing final wishes. Again, we get that talking about our passing or the passing of a loved one is difficult. Here are some tips for overcoming these challenges:

  • Make it a Casual Conversation: Do not push your loved one too much to talk about their final wishes. Do not act like it is an interrogation. Be more casual and try asking questions like “Hey (insert name), have you ever thought about what you would like to happen with your home after you pass?” This will make it more relaxed than perhaps a more direct question. If they do not want to talk about it, do not press them. It may take some time. You can always ask again in the future after a few days.

  • Be Patient: Take your time. It is challenging to talk about death for everyone. Getting the idea in their mind by asking gently one time can go a long way. Do not force them to give you an answer. Allowing the question to stew in their mind gives them time to reflect. This may prompt them to tell you their final wishes at a later time.

More and more families are choosing to have a cremation service to celebrate the life of a deceased loved one. Your cremation service can include all the same services as a traditional funeral. It can include a casket viewing prior to the cremation, as well as a memorial service afterwards. The memorial service can feature the urn on display for guests to pay their respects. No matter what, we at Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home want to make sure all their wishes for the perfect remembrance of a loved one are met through a cremation service . A cremation ceremony is also the perfect alternative if you want something a little different from a traditional funeral service. Maybe you’re not about having a casket and a large funeral ceremony. Funerals are the way many are able to begin or participate in the process of grief. It’s meant to serve many purposes, from final goodbyes and long overdue hellos from distant friends, to a way we can celebrate a beautiful life and all the departed has shared and meant to those in attendance. Planning a funeral, however, can often add stress and tension to the families of those that we’ve lost, leading to disagreements, postponed grief and downright hard work at the hands of those that may be in the most pain. This is why we recommend, if possible, pre-planning the arrangements for the days that lie ahead if you anticipate them on the horizon. Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home works with families to help them best arrange the events that surround the death of a loved one or of oneself. We’ll collaborate with both the families of the departed and with those anticipating their departure so that the loved ones left behind can use the days after a passing to truly grieve, share stories and remember a beautiful life without the stress of planning an upcoming funeral, burial or cremation service . Funeral pre-planning also gives families time to truly determine what their loved one might prefer at their own service, often with that loved one playing a hand in those plans, guaranteeing a day that genuinely depicts the life and wishes of the person being honored. If you live in Albany, NY; Clifton Park, NY; Troy, NY; or a surrounding community, get in touch with our funeral home staff to learn more about the funeral pre-planning process or to schedule a time to discuss your needs and wishes together. We’ll work with you on a budget and promise to honor every detail that you feel is an important addition to the day at hand.
